Featuring 8th Grade Science Class
Tracie Cain
The 8th-grade students have been actively engaged in a hands-on, immersive experience where they apply their science skills to solve a simulated crime. This interdisciplinary project challenges them to step into the roles of crime scene investigators, where they observe the crime scene, collect and test evidence, and record their findings with precision. Each student is responsible for constructing CERs (Claims, Evidence, and Reasoning) to logically deduce the identity of the suspects involved.
As they progress, students sharpen essential skills such as observation, writing, inference, deductive reasoning, measurement, and data collection. The project culminates in a mock trial, a dynamic and interactive experience where students assume the roles of attorneys, bailiffs, suspects, and forensic scientists. Through this trial, they present their findings, challenge evidence, and work collaboratively to ensure that justice is served by convicting those they can prove guilty.
This project not only reinforces scientific concepts but also cultivates critical thinking, teamwork, and public speaking skills, offering a holistic approach to learning that is both engaging and educational.
Line of the day goes to Josye “I’m crying because my best friend is dead” while on the stand testifying!!
